AWU members at Australian Reinforcing Company voted to stop work. Workers haven’t had a wage increase for the last two years and are disappointed that management hasn’t offered a real increase. They’re fighting for more permanent jobs and for casuals to be converted to permanent positions. The steel industry is experiencing a boom but workers aren’t seeing any of the benefits. When the industry was in trouble it was the workers who took the hit, they took pay freezes, they took pay cuts. Now the steel companies are making money and have long-term security management have forgotten. This isn’t good enough.
