COVID-19 has brought out the best and worst in people. Currently Organisers at the AWU are busy making sure employers are adhering to the law, doing the right thing and ensuring the safety of all their employees. There have been cases in asphalt where members are being told to use personal vehicles, with no travel allowances due to ‘exceptional circumstances’ of the pandemic.

An Organiser has attempted to go on site to look into these matters, only to be told not to come any further, or police will be involved. There has been no action for the safety of the employees and zero consultation in any changes for COVID-19 policies. These employers have an obligation under the OHS legislation to maintain a safe working environment. The matters have been referred to the Fair Work Commission and remain ongoing.
