AWU members are being kicked to the kerb by facility service provider ISS. Boasting on their website of having over 14,000 employees, it appears now they have 13,998 after the sacking of two of their Melbourne based workers.

ISS operates in a variety of sectors and has picked up some of the cleaning contracts in wake of COVID-19. The work offered to replace being made redundant is less pay, less hours and no security. One of the members has worked for ISS for twenty years, there has been no accountability or loyalty by ISS in the treatment of this member. There has been no move to retrain or upskill workers in the wake of the redundancies and sackings, just an expectation that they can work in lower paying jobs or not at all.

Online ISS states ‘Our priority is the safety and wellbeing of our people and our customers. In each country we have been implementing business continuity plans in line with local regulation and restrictions. We are adapting to a fast moving environment.’ The AWU has lodged a general protections application and wants to see the truth in this statement and action. There needs to be improvement with redundancies and communication with employees. There are national employment standards and long service leave clauses that need to be taken into seriously.
